We sit down with Church of God minister James DeGraffenreid to get honest about what happens when believers are hurt, churches split, and “unity” becomes a slogan instead of a practice. James pulls from Noah Webster’s 1828 dictionary to show reconciliation as action: calling people back into union after estrangement, settling quarrels, and even accepting God’s providence in affliction. From there, we ground it in key Bible passages on Christian reconciliation, including Matthew 5:24 and 2 Corinthians 5, where we’re reminded that God reconciles us to Himself through Jesus Christ and then gives us the ministry of reconciliation. That framework changes how we approach church conflict, forgiveness, and accountability.
Then we tackle the question everyone feels but few say out loud: what if you want reconciliation and the other person doesn’t? We draw a clear line between forgiveness and reconciliation, talk about repentance, and discuss why restored relationship can’t be forced when someone refuses to humble themselves. We also address willful sin, 1 John 5, and the serious responsibility pastors carry, including how bad leadership can deepen division and create lasting church hurt.

Church trauma is real, and it often shows up as confusion, shame, and a deep distrust of spiritual authority.
On Wounded Hearts, Wounded Churches, we talk frankly about religious abuse, spiritual manipulation, and how wounds from a controlling church environment can push people into isolation or even a total break with faith. We also name the hidden cost: people stop praying, stop attending church, or rebuild their identity around the harm they experienced. Healing starts when we stop pretending it was “nothing” and admit the injury, whether it came through sexual abuse, addiction patterns, or toxic leadership that used fear to control.
A major theme is how a group can begin with sincere worship and strong preaching, then drift into man rule and coercion.
James describes an earlier atmosphere that felt deeply reverent, with congregational singing and messages that pointed to a crucified life. But he also warns that something darker can operate under the surface long before it becomes obvious. When leadership begins to present itself as the answer, twists the gospel, or implies that spiritual status comes through proximity to “apostles,” the message shifts from Jesus to personalities. That shift is one of the clearest markers of cult-like control, especially when it includes threats, intimidation, or pressure to hand over money, homes, businesses, or retirement accounts.
From there, we move to recovery after spiritual abuse and the question so many people carry: How do I find my way back to God after I have been hurt by church?
The answer is not a new brand, a perfect community, or waiting until you feel worthy. It begins with desire and a simple, honest prayer: “Lord, please help me.” James connects this to the prodigal son coming to himself and remembering the goodness of the Father. Trauma can distort memory, but spiritual healing often starts when you recall what was true before the manipulation, and when you give God room to draw you again by the Holy Spirit.
We also explore the internal battle that keeps people stuck: the enemy’s replay loop. Shame replays the worst moment, magnifies the wound, and insists you are permanently disqualified. Whether you backslid or were victimized, that voice tries to keep you from peace, joy, and repentance. The path forward is honest confession and godly sorrow that leads to real change, not excuses or damage control. Scripture frames it as returning to our first love and doing the first works, and it insists on urgency:
Today is the day of salvation.
